Indoor Games at the Howick Historical Village

We found out that most of the indoor toys were made of wood, with some string, ribbon and a little bit of metal for some toys. The toys were fun to play with and kept us amused for a long time.  Some of the toys we use today have their origins in the toys from long ago.

Unpacking the Trunk at the Howick Historical Village

Settlers to New Zealand were allowed to bring one trunk of belongings per family.  We found out the types of items they bought with them to help them in their daily lives.  It was interesting to see the things that they had and how much work they all had to do just to eat and survive.

Outdoor Games at the Howick Historical Village

Stilts, Graces and Skipping were some of the outdoor games available in 1837.  All the toys and play equipment were made from wood or other available materials - no plastic.

What did a classroom look like in 1837?  We found out some differences in how school was then and compared it to how it is now.
